What happens during an avalanche?

You will need this things for the experiment:

• clear plastic bottle
• scissors
• sugar
• rice
• salt
• flour
• a polystyrene tray
• red and yellow plasticine
• a sticky tape
• three elastic bands
• 1 large sheet of cardboard

1- Close the top of the bottle as strong as you can.
Ask an adult to cut a rectangular (7x12cm)in the bottle as in the drawing.
Push the plastic flap outwards.

2- Pour some sugar inside the bottle to cover the bottom of it.
Cover the sugar with a layer of rice. Then pour in several spoonfuls of salt and flour.
This layers are like different layers of snow

3- Make two plasticine cylinders about 2cm long. These are like two skiers.

4- Use the scissors  to cut out a small piece of polystyrene 1cm wide . Push it into one
of the pieces of plasticine.

5-Place your skiers on the layer of flour. Close the flap and fix it carefully with sticky tape.
Put the three elastic bands around the bottle.

6- Raise one side of your cardboard sheet so that it is sloped. Hold the bottle at the top
of the slope then let it go. Where are the skiers when it stops?
